Passion for Art Pays Off

Sophomore Trey-Viana Adams describes her art as being simple with a strong message, and from April 9-April 27th two of her art pieces can be seen at the Create 19 exhibit held at the Hampton Roads Convention Center.

Adams’ graphic design teacher, Ai Choo Ashe, gave her the news that her artwork would be on display. Proud that her work was chosen, Adams sighed with relief.  “It was like, finally I did something and it paid off.”

Ms. Ashe stated that Adams’ typography piece was selected because of its quality and clarity.  The image depicted a bird formed out of words that described Trey-Viana. According to her, the bird is her spirit animal.  “It represents me because I’m shy and free.”  The other art piece is a polygonal portrait of entertainer Rihanna. For this piece, Ashe said that it “ demonstrated an understanding of polygonal art and color schemes.”

Adams finds herself attracted to graphic design because she enjoys combining multiple features from various programs. She started taking graphic design classes in her freshman year of high school, and although some have discouraged her from pursuing a career in this field she refuses to give up. “There’s a first for everything,” Adams said in response to critiques of the lack of art majors in college. Adams hopes to attend Virginia Commonwealth University for the graphic design program. After college, she hopes to open her own business as a graphic designer.

Create 19, is a Hampton City Schools annual art show which features pieces from students grades 9 through 12. According to the Hampton City Schools’ website, last year’s show exhibited more than 300 student art pieces. Adams advises anyone afraid to showcase their artwork to give it a try.

“Always stay confident because you never know who is looking for what you have to offer,” she said.
