Spirit Week has been a beloved tradition in schools since the 1950s, and Bethel High’s own Spirit Week is right around the corner. Students are buzzing with excitement and eager to share their thoughts about this year’s activities.
One student said it best. “I feel like they need it [spirit week], like all schools need it for the students to feel like school isn’t boring and there’s stuff to do here,” said senior Nasir Henderson.
Spirit Week is all about getting students excited for school, and some themes have definitely stuck in our students’ minds.
“Probably when I was a freshman and I had my first pep rally and it was fun,” recalled senior Jaela Testamark.
Pep rallies are the most anticipated event of the year, with students dressing up in Bethel High colors to celebrate their school pride.
When asked if students were going to participate this year, there was a general consensus among the crowd, including even your favorite teachers.
“I will, I will. I got all my Bethel t-shirts and everything ready to go,” said Mr. Gurzynski.
Jaela agreed with equal enthusiasm: “This year I’m definitely going to participate more than how I did last year.”
Spirit Week builds up momentum leading up to the Homecoming Dance, encouraging students to go all out, especially with the added incentive of a free Homecoming Dance ticket dangling in the air.
Students and staff have been brainstorming their favorite theme ideas.
Mr. Barnes suggested a “Dress Up Like Old Folks” theme, which would be an interesting take for both students and teachers.
Elenah Lidsay-Greene, a junior, wants a “90s style day where people come back in big white t-shirts and joggers.” Nasir hopes to extend the fun: “I would probably make it longer than a week–probably two weeks,” he remarked.
While making Spirit Week longer is definitely something interesting, journalists were curious to know students’ preparations for the upcoming week.
Senior Anilah Oblein said, “[I will] make sure I look at the flyer and make sure I have everything for Spirit Week. If I don’t, I will go to the store and buy new items.”
Senior Niynana Rushing has similar plans: “I’m going to go buy some cowgirl boots and put an outfit together to match that spirit week day.”
Bethel is definitely in for a treat this year as students–especially seniors–gear up for Spirit Week. Their school pride is sure to shine, and Bear Facts journalists are ready to capture every moment, from the hallway fashion to the pep rally cheers.
