Bethel High School students enjoyed a full day trip to Georgetown and Howard University on March 21st.
The group of 100 juniors and seniors left Bethel and visited Georgetown before receiving a guided tour of Howard, while stopping to get food in between the events, before returning home at 9 pm. Georgetown was more so a brief stop in the morning, as students walked around briefly before getting breakfast. The Howard visit was the highlight of the trip.
“My friends and I loved Georgetown’s campus, but we all looked forward to the real HU!” one junior said.
At HU, students received a two hour guided tour to see certain features of the school including the dorms, honor college, recreational and student areas. Students even got to experience HU students talking about their experiences.
“Some of the Howard classrooms look like the courtroom [at Bethel].” one student pointed out.
“We just had so much fun,” another said regarding the whole trip.
Many students enjoyed the opportunity to visit and learn about these colleges, especially those upperclassmen who are interested in pursuing college after high school. Specifically, the trip was so popular that it filled up less than a month after being introduced, with plans to conduct another one to North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University (NCAT).
“It really changed my mind at HBCUs because there was..so much student life and activities to do at the school. Everyone seemed so happy…and there’s so many resources,” Michelle Chidibere, a junior, said.
Field trips like this can provide students with fun experiences while also helping them make decisions about their future. For some, this made the colleges some of their top choices for applications, or helped others commit after being accepted.
“The entire trip confirmed where I truly belonged and which school was the real HU!” Denise Penn, a junior, stated about her experience.
