Despite constant criticism and doubt, this year the Bruins have flourished and had a record breaking varsity football season. Becoming the #6 seed, things are looking bright for the Bruins’ future.
Going 6-4 in the regular season is a historic milestone for the Bethel varsity football team. This marked the Bruins’ best regular season since 2015. Leading the way to this historic season was running back Amari “Ferrari Mari¨ Pryear, who had an impressive season himself.
In order to create history, the team needed to move and work as one unit.
¨We all just work together,” Coach Todd Barker shared. “Y’all just worked hard. They started finally like listening to seniors a little bit, [and] leadership stepped up a little bit more this year, so I felt like all that played apart.¨
Speaking of achieving goals, running back Amari Pryear had a goal of 1500 rushing yards and 20 touchdowns coming into the season. He cleared these goals and achieved a total of 1515 total rushing yards and 24 touchdowns. He couldn’t achieve this alone: he had the help of his Offensive line.
Senior offensive lineman Seveon Gilbert, who was also awarded with 2nd team all district, stated that ¨Making history this year was a team effort…and doing this proves how well the team has come together compared to past years¨
Team chemistry seemed to be a lacking component in previous years teams, so the Bruins had things such as Camp Bruin, where the Bruins stay overnight together for a week at Liberty, to help with that. This is also many Bruins favorite part of the season.
Stars Seveon Gilbert & Larry Dove enjoyed Camp Bruin, and described it as ¨team bonding exercises, having fun and getting in trouble together.¨
This season was filled with memorable moments such as hanging with the 3x champions, The Phoebus Phantoms, putting up 70 points, and Amari Pryear reaching 1500 yards against Menchville.
Quarterback Derek Fisher stated that he “wishes the students did more supporting than hating.¨ Running back Amari Pryear doubled down on this, asserting ¨We might win the PD next year.¨
The Bruins look forward to continuing to make history, aiming to win the PD and have a home playoff game. Its only up from here for the Bruins, so go support them next year!
