Advice Column

“I need some assistance. I seem to be struggling with some things relationship wise. I’m a junior and I’ve never had a boyfriend. However, I recently was told that someone would like to get to know/date me. I said no, for a few reasons. I don’t believe I am ready for a relationship. I also think I have too much to work on personally, and I have too much on my plate. However, I’d like to have someone there for me, and I think my biggest problem is that it’s unfamiliar and I am scared that it will not work out. He is close with my best friend’s boyfriend, so I feel as if things didn’t work out well, that would put a rift in a few friendships.”

Dear Anonymous,

“The most important thing in your life is YOU. If you aren’t comfortable with something don’t do it and don’t let anyone pressure you into that. You will never be comfortable in any relationship unless you’re ready for it and you can’t just push yourself to be just for the experience. If this person really wants to get to know you then you can start off as friends, maybe you will get comfortable with the idea of being in a relationship or you might not, everything still comes down to what you want and what makes you feel comfortable. Being in a relationship is something many people are familiar with so it isn’t uncommon. My main advice to you is to do whatever makes you comfortable and take in all of the pros and cons and then make your final decision.”

Sincerely,

B. Ruins
